Visitation: The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Alvis Cleo Webb was born Dec. 27, 1913, to Samuel Baxter Webb and Eva Lena Henderson Webb in Limestone County. He passed Aug. 14, 2010, in Tyler, surrounded by his four surviving children and other family members. Alvis Cleo Webb was born to a farm life in Limestone County and had the misfortune to lose his father at a very early age. But despite difficulties, Alvis was determined and worked very hard to further his education, first moving into town and working to finish his high school diploma. After that, through hard work in what were hard times, Alvis went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin, completing his bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1937. In that same year, he and Doris Jo Culpepper were married. Alvis started teaching High School in La Feria and working in the summers to complete his master's degree in Austin, finishing it in 1941. Soon afterwards he was recruited by the U.S. Weather Bureau and became a meteorologist, continuing his education throughout the years he worked for the Weather Bureau. Alvis started his service in Brownsville, living there until 1960 when the family moved to San Antonio. In 1971 Alvis and Doris Jo and Patti moved to Hurst. He and Doris Jo made friends wherever they lived and were always very active in a Baptist church. Alvis retired in 1975 from what was now called the U.S. Weather Service. He and Doris Jo had many happy years in retirement until her death in 1991. Although he was very discouraged by her passing, Alvis found the strength to go on without her. He was very active and lived by himself until he reached the age of 94 when he experienced some health problems. After that Alvis lived until his death with his daughter Brenda and her family in Tyler. Brenda provided a very loving home and took excellent care of Dad. Alvis Cleo Webb had a long and wonderful life. He was an excellent example to his children and others of how to work hard, have fun, love those around you and be a good Christian man. Alvis will be missed by many, but his joy in life and kindness will live on in those he influenced. Many heartfelt thanks from the children of Alvis to the Hospice of East Texas for the kind and excellent care provided to our Dad, and the family, at a difficult time. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Clifton Webb and Wesley Lynn Oakes; sister, Theresadale Guest; daughter, Lynda Ruth Baron; and three grandchildren, Scott Webb, Jeffrey Lathem and Deborah Sheppard. Alvis lost his dearly loved wife of 54 years, Doris Jo Culpepper Webb, in 1991. Survivors: Brother, Condell Webb of Groesbeck; son, Gerald Webb and wife, Sydney, of Marshall; daughter, Brenda Gail Sheppard and husband, David, of Tyler; son, Michael Webb and wife, Regine, of Austin; daughter, Patricia Webb Combs and husband, Randy, of Elgin; grandsons, Paul Lathem, Robert Webb, John Sheppard and James Sheppard; and 10 great-grandchildren.
