SAGINAW -- Cristy Roberts Martinez, 31, our beautiful little girl, left us on Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, to be with God and her baby son in heaven. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lucas Keller Funeral Home, 137 E. Hill St., with the Rev. Ben Disney of Arborlawn United Methodist Church officiating and assisted by Eric Greear. Memorials: Cristy's wish was for donations to be made to The Warm Place, 809 Lipscomb St., Fort Worth, Texas 76104 or Odyssey House, 6940 River Park Circle, Fort Worth, Texas 76116. "The Warm Place is a grief support center that I hope will benefit David and Ryan in the near future and Odyssey is the wonderful place that made it possible for Cristy to be without physical pain the last few weeks and were so supportive of us all," Sherry Shafer, Cristy's mother, said. Cristy was born July 6, 1979, in Midland. She entered this world full of energy and determination to face life's events head on. As a little girl she was the apple of everyone's eye, being the first grandchild and niece in the family. As Cristy grew up, it was evident she had a mind of her own. She was a daddy's girl and never missed a chance to be daddy's helper. She loved to dress up like a lady but also loved being a tomboy. Cristy faced many challenges in her young life. She made tough decisions that were hard for her but benefited others. Her world revolved around her sweet husband, David, and precious son, Ryan. She was a wonderful wife and mother and worked hard to give her family the best of everything. Cristy was diagnosed with cervical cancer Dec. 17, 2009. She was pregnant with her other angel, Reid, when problems started. Had it not been for her pregnancy the cancer would not have been discovered when it was. Cristy wanted to forgo treatment until little Reid could survive on his own but it wasn't possible. Little Reid went to heaven on Jan. 25, 2010, to be his mommy's guardian angel and watch over her. Cristy continued to fight enduring the side effects while at the same time doing her best to remain positive and still take care of David and Ryan and also working full time as much as possible. Shortly after her diagnosis Christ started the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter for the National Coalition for Cervical Cancer. She wanted to raise awareness about the importance of better testing to prevent the horrible disease. Cristy did everything she was supposed to...yearly pap smears, regular check ups, etc. and it still wasn't enough. No signs of cancer showed up until problems started with her pregnancy. Cristy was in contact with women from around the world who also suffered from this often missed disease. She offered hope and encouragement to these women and in return felt she was making a difference. Although her ability to work with the coalition was limited she continued until her symptoms made it impossible. Cristy was employed at Saxon Mortgage Company. Her co-workers were amazed how well she looked and how she continued to give her best. Her wonderful supervisors were more than willing to let her work at her own pace knowing she could get the job done in spite of the pain, nausea and overall weakness she experienced on a daily basis. Cristy's family would like to thank all the special people who provided care and support during her illness, including Dr. Angelo Mendez and his staff, Dr. Mark Messing and staff at Texas Oncology, the OB unit at Baylor Grapevine Hospital and the staff of H-E-B Hospital in Bedford. A special thanks to the staff at Odyssey Health Care and especially the staff at Odyssey House for providing loving and compassionate care as well as emotional and spiritual support. Also to the many special friends of Cristy and her family who were always available to help in anyway. Cristy touched many lives and will continue to be a source of strength for everyone who knew her. We will miss you, sweet baby girl, but we will be with you again in heaven where there will only be blessed times. Take care of Reid and tell him how much we love and miss him too.
