DAVID LYON

FORT WORTH -- David Kenneth Lyon, a retired U.S. Army colonel, died peacefully Monday morning, Aug. 29, 2011, early in his 85th year. Service: Following military honors at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Col. Lyon will be laid to rest in the Mausoleum at Greenwood Memorial Park with the Rt. Rev. Sam B. Hulsey reciting committal prayers. Visitation: Family and friends will gather in the Great Room at Robertson Mueller Harper from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Memorials: In lieu of usual remembrances, consideration of expressions to Community Hospice of Texas, the Humane Society of North Texas, the Fort Worth Zoo or Fisher House, in his memory, is suggested. Born in Manchester, Vt., on July 13, 1926, David was the son of David Kelley and Dorothy Jones Lyon. He graduated from Classical High School in Springfield, Mass., before being drafted into the U.S. Army. While serving in Japan, David received a field appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he received his B.S. in 1952. After receiving his M.S. in nuclear physics from Purdue University, he returned to West Point and taught for three years. Col. Lyon served two tours of duty in Korea before attending the Royal Australian Army Staff College. After serving in Vietnam, Col. Lyon attended the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., served tours in the Pentagon and a final assignment at Fort Hood, where he retired in 1982. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Mariann, whom he married in 1962, David is survived by his son, Robert S. "Bob" Lyon of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Tyler Lyon and his wife, Allie, also of Columbus, U.S. Navy Lt. Blake Lyon, currently serving in Iraq, and Yana Lyon, who is finishing her studies at Purdue University; great-grandson, Alex Lyon; sister, Harriet Lyon Hamner of Albany, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews and their families.
