A native of Chicago, Ill. Dorothy Marie was born April 28, 1931, the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Connelly Galayda Cucka. She attended Catholic schools before graduating from Steinmetz High School in 1948 and received her R.N./B.S. from Mercy School of Nursing at St. Francis Xavier College for Women in 1952. Dorothy worked at Mercy Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. She was stationed at Great Lakes and Hawaii, before being transferred to Midway Island, later returning to Hawaii. Lieutenant Cucka was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1959. In 1960, Dorothy joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Maine and transferred to Hof, Germany. In 1967, she attended Boston University where she received her M.S. in 1969. She was transferred to Carswell Air Force Base in 1967 and married Arthur S. Burton on February 10, 1968. Major Burton was discharged from the air force in 1969. As a civilian, she worked at Harris Hospital from 1969 to 1979 and joined the staff of White Settlement Hospital in 1982 before retiring.
