Dorothy Hitzfeld Strew

RETTA -- Dorothy Nell Hitzfeld Strew passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessing Funeral Home Chapel. Interment: Rendon Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Blessing Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or charity of choice. The world became a better place when Dorothy Nell Thornton was born on June 2, 1921, to Augustus Jackson and Alta Matthews Thornton in the Retta community of Johnson County. Heaven was blessed when Dorothy went to live eternally with the Lord and her loved ones on Jan. 26, 2008. Dorothy attended elementary school in Rendon and graduated from Mansfield High School. She attended Harris School of Nursing and devoted much of her life to that profession. In 1941 Dorothy married W.H. "Bill" Hitzfeld. They had two children, Harold and Karen. After 47 years of marriage, Bill died and Dorothy was fortunate to be the wife of another wonderful man, John Strew. They married in 1994 and were inseparable until John's death in 2005. The greatest heartache in Dorothy's life was the death of her son, Harold Thornton Hitzfeld Sr., in 1999. Her sister, Vaudene Walden, also preceded her in death in 1968. Survivors: Daughter, Karen Reinbott (Ian); sister, Betty Williams (Gardner); grandchildren, Michael Brock, Thorny Hitzfeld, Wendy Hitzfeld Cates and her son, Riley Cates; nieces, Debbie Owens, Susan DuPont, Linda Bittleston; nephew, Jim Walden. Dorothy's much-loved extended family includes Carol Bartholomew and her family, Jerry Strew and Sharon Strew Johnson, Carolyn Hitzfeld and the residents and staff of Autumn Leaves of Flower Mound.
