Edward R. Manning      KELLER -- Edward R. Manning of Keller passed away Friday, March 4, 2011, after a prolonged illness.        Memorial service: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lucas Funeral Home, 137 E. Hill St., Keller.        Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to build a Memory Park in Old Town Keller. Donations may be sent to Box 2662, Keller, Texas 76244.        Edward was a man of few words, but unending love and caring for those around him. He was born in Summit, Miss., on Jan. 2, 1943. He played college basketball at Jackson State University and was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets and played with Baltimore, Chicago and Portland in the NBA and then played for the New York Knicks, Carolina Cougars and the Indiana Pacers in the ABA.        Following his professional basketball career, Manning was an assistant coach at North Carolina A&T and later became an assistant coach at Kansas under head coach Larry Brown from 1984-1988. During that time, Kansas won the 1985 Big Eight Tournament, advanced to two NCAA final fours (1986 and 1988) and won the l988 national championship. Following his stint at KU, Manning followed Brown and was an NBA assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs. He then worked as a scout in the NBA, retiring from the Memphis Grizzlies because of his health.        He started a new career when he and his wife, Joan, opened Artizan Alley and Apron Strings in Old Town Keller in May 2010. He was a delight with customers and artists alike and will be missed by all at the shop and Old Town Keller.        Survivors: Wife, Joan of Keller; son, Danny and his wife, Julie; daughter, Dawn Downing and her husband, Vince, son, Stephon Sudduth and wife, Hope; stepson, Chris Michaels; stepdaughter, Jennifer Kennell and her husband, Nathan; 11 grandchildren; former wife, Darnelle; and his siblings, John, Virginia, Eva, Genie and L.H.
