FORT WORTH -- James Daryl Spence, 62, died peacefully Friday morning, Aug. 31, 2007, at home, surrounded by his family. Memorial Service: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of University Christian Church, 2720 S. University Drive. Honorary Bearers will be Don Evans, Ken Goodman, Joe Harmison, Carter High, Jim Martin, Edd McNeil, Terry Walsh and Clay Wiegand. Visitation: His family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to establish a scholarship in Daryl's name for a Tarrant County recipient attending the University Of Oklahoma School of Pharmacy, P.O. Box 26901, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73190 and Ridglea Christian Church, 6720 Elizabeth Lane, Fort Worth 76116. Daryl was born Dec. 27, 1944, in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Dr. Ray and Gladys Spence. After graduating from Paul's Valley High School in 1963, Daryl went on to obtain his pharmacy degree from the University of Oklahoma. In 1971, he and his wife, Melinda Broyles Spence, moved to Fort Worth. Daryl opened Spence Pharmacy in west Fort Worth in 1979 and in 2003 he opened Texas Health Care Pharmacy, specializing in hospice care. Daryl had been active in local, state and national pharmacy associations in his career, serving as president of both Tarrant County Pharmacy Association (TCPA) and Texas Pharmacy Association (TPA) and various other leadership positions. During his tenure as president of TPA, Daryl led a successful effort that created an amendment to the Texas Pharmacy Act. This amendment enabled hospice patients to receive their medication in a timelier manner. Daryl had devoted his professional life to serving his patients and independent community pharmacy. He had been recognized by the National Association of Community Pharmacists (NACP) as pharmacist of the year in 2005 as well as the lifetime achievement award for TCPA and he was inducted into the American College of Apothecaries in 2006. Daryl was also honored by the University Of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy alumni association as distinguished alumni of the year in 2006. In addition to his professional affiliations, Daryl served as vice president of the University of Oklahoma School of Pharmacy alumni association, and on the Deans Advisory Council for the Texas Tech School of Pharmacy. Daryl was a 35-year member of Ridglea Christian Church, having served as deacon, elder, board moderator and trustee. His favorite pastimes included traveling with his family, golf and fishing. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Mynhier Spence. Survivors: His wife, Melinda; children, Melissa Spence Tapp and husband, Mike and Sander Spence and wife, Rachel, both of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Peyton Ann and Michael David Tapp and James Walker and Madeline Ann Spence; father, Dr. Ray E. Spence; brother, Dr. Dean Spence and wife, Cheryl; sister, Mary Jane Elkins and husband, Gordon; brother-in-law, Buzzy Broyles and wife, Sally; mother-in-law, Ann Broyles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
