He was a veteran and Bronze Star recipient for his service in World War II and retired from the Texas National Guard as a chief warrant officer 04 in 1975. His years of service spanned from March 20, 1941, to Dec. 20, 1975. John was born Dec. 20, 1915, and grew up in Keller. He was a member of Riverside Lions Club, serving as president. He was a longtime supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as scoutmaster of Troop 88 for over 40 years and in various positions with the Longhorn Council. He received the Silver Beaver Award and was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, and Scottish Rite. He received the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award and the God and Service Recognition from the Disciples of Christ and Boy Scouts of America. He was recognized for 40 years of service to Twin Arrows and Junior Leader Training for the Boy Scouts.
