FORT WORTH -- John Mark Whitman Jr., 87, a retired teacher, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2008, following a lengthy illness. Funeral: Services for Mr. Whitman will be held privately. John was born Jan. 11, 1921, to John Mark and Leta Simmons Whitman in Haskell. He was a graduate of Hardin Simmons University in Abilene and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952 after having attained the rank of first lieutenant. Retiring in 1986 after teaching for many years in the Dallas Independent School District, John loved to read, travel and had a special love for New Orleans, La. He resided in Dallas most of his life, but moved to Fort Worth seven years ago to be closer to his family, due to his declining health. John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert W. Whitman Sr. of Breckenridge; and sisters, Grace Reid of Fort Worth and Virginia Henshaw of Haskell.
