FORT WORTH -- Kathleen "Kay" Kolstad Hanley, 97, a retired teacher with the FWISD, died peacefully Monday evening, Jan. 29, 2007. Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran Church, Montgomery Street at Camp Bowie Blvd. The Rev. Dr. Ronald K. Heimsoth, pastor of the church, will officiate. Entombment: Thursday in The Mausoleum at Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria, Minn. Memorials: Consideration of contributions, in lieu of flowers, to Trinity Lutheran Church, 3621 Tulsa Way, Fort Worth 76107; or a charity of one's choice is suggested. A native of Alexandria, Minn., Kathleen was born May 10, 1910, the daughter of Cleve A. and Inga Tamina Torgerson Kolstad. She was a graduate of Alexandria High School before attending St. Olaf College where she received a bachelor of arts. Kay received her masters of arts from Eastman School of Music and her Ph.D. in music from the University of Colorado at Boulder. On Aug. 2, 1940, Kay married Lawrence Andrew Hanley. To this marriage was born one son, Dick, who was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in 1970. Kay and Lawrence moved to Beaumont where she and Lawrence taught at Lamar College, later moving to Dallas and Southern Methodist University. In 1953, they moved to Fort Worth near Texas Christian University. Kay taught Latin at a private girl's school before joining the Fort Worth Independent School District as a history teacher at Arlington Heights High School. Ever proud of her Norwegian-Lutheran roots, Kay was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active with the choral music program and composed several works. She was an active member of the Troll Hjem Chapter of the Norwegian Society of Texas. She played the piano regularly in the afternoons at her residence, Broadway Plaza at Westover Hills, for her personal enjoyment and the entertainment of fellow residents. In addition to her husband, who died in March 2006 after 65 years of marriage, and son, Kay was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors: Brother, Karl "Bud" Kolstad of Alexandria, Minn.; nephews, Kurt Kolstad and his wife, Cindy of Minneapolis, Minn., and Kristian Kolstad and his wife, JoAnn of Willmar, Minn.; great-nephew, Kenton Kolstad; great-niece, Jenna Kolstad; and many friends, acquaintances and former students.
