BEDFORD -- Laura Stringer McLallen, 75, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009. Memorial service: 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Hurst. Interment: Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas. Laura was born June 17, 1933, in Hemphill to Lula Mae Jordon and Travis White. She was a graduate of Hemphill High School. She graduated from at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1955. She had additional studies at West Texas State, Lamar State, the University of Denver, Wayland Baptist University and Houston Baptist University. After graduating with a teacher's certificate, she taught speech and English in the Belton Independent School District and Hereford High and Plainview High schools in Texas. She also taught in the Denver public schools in Colorado and the Tyndall public schools in South Dakota. She taught for 16 years. Next, she was the director of faculty evaluations at the University of Texas at Austin. She then served as a church secretary at Broadway Baptist Church and University Baptist Church in Fort Worth for 12 years. In retirement she devoted much of her time to being a grandmother. Laura was an active Christian, serving as a Sunday school teacher for some 42 years, a church deacon, choir member and on numerous committees. She went on four mission tours in other countries. She had been a longtime member of University Baptist Church in Fort Worth and was a member of First Baptist Church in Hurst at the time of her passing. She was an active wife, mother and grandmother for over 50 years. Her cooking was legendary as well as her giving spirit to all who were around her. She was a member of Who's Who in American College and Universities, the board of the Alumni Association of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Tarrant County Junior College Wives Club, Wayland Baptist University's Woman's Club, National Honor Society, Wives Club of Southwestern Seminary and the Texas Association of Church Secretaries. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jimmie Stringer; her daughter, Luann; and her granddaughter, Jennifer. Survivors: Husband of 54 years, Dan; son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Tami McLallen of Bedford; grandchildren, Morgan and Travis McLallen of Bedford; sister, Beth Colombe of Pineland; sisters-in-law, Sammie Travis of Gayesville, Vt., and Louise Stringer of Pineland; nephew, Kevin Travis of New York City; niece, Susan Wegoner of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; and great-nephew, Austin Wegoner of Laguna Niguel, Calif.
