HURST -- Luvern William Phegley, 83, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, in a local hospital. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John The Apostle Catholic Church, 7341 Glenview Drive. Burial: Bill will be laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery following the Funeral Mass. Visitation: Bill will lie in state from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Lucas Hurst Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road. Luvern William Phegley was born Sept. 20, 1924, in St. Louis, Mo., to William Charles and Katherine Stemier Phegley. Bill attended St. Louis University and received numerous degrees, including the juris doctor of law. He later taught law at St. Louis University. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific. Bill worked for the Frisco and Burlington Northern railroads as commerce manager, retiring in 1988. He served as scoutmaster for Troop 51 in St. Louis. He was an avid gardener and painter. Bill was a longtime member of St. John The Apostle Catholic Church. Survivors: His wife of 52 years, Eileen; sons, William Thomas, James Michael and his wife, Sandra, David Edward and his wife, Carol, and John Joseph; daughter, Catherine Mary Johnson and her husband, Matt; grandchildren, Jasmin Phegley, Jessi Phegley, Mat Johnson, Sadie Johnson, McKinsey Phegley and Jack Phegley; sister, Jean Wolf and her husband, Fred; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
