Mabel Matthews

HURST -- Mabel S. Matthews, 92, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010.        Graveside service: 10 a.m. Wednesday. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Marshall, in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park.        Memorials: Should friends desire, memorials are requested to the Mabel Matthews Scholarship Endowment Fund, care of the American Hemerocallis Society, P.O. Box 10, Dexter, Ga. 31019.        Mabel, the daughter of John Raymond and Lillie Mae Connell Mullis, was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Charlotte, N.C.        She was an area real estate broker for 45 years. She developed a great interest in daylilies and in 1987 registered her first Hemerocallis "Lady Callie," named for a daylily friend. She registered 63 cultlivars, primarily with the pre-name Hurst. She established scholarships for women in need of assistance at Texas Wesleyan University and Tarrant County College.        She was preceded in death by her husband and her son, John Raymond Matthews.        Survivors: Sister, Lorene Hargett of Charlotte.
