HURST -- Mary Jane "Kiwi" Powell, 77, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at her home in the presence of her loving family. Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lucas Hurst Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road. VFW Chaplain Jeff King will officiate. Burial: (with military honors) 1 p.m. in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mt. Creek Parkway, Dallas. Visitation: Kiwi will lie in state 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mary Jane was born Feb. 4, 1931, in Wilmerding, Pa., to Jozef and Rozalia Szpak Kijowski who had immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1917 coming through Ellis Island, N.Y. She was married to Louis George "Sarge" Powell for 49 years. Sarge preceded her in death in 2006. Mary was extremely proud of her service in the United States Army for eight years, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. She was stationed in Germany for a time during her service. Kiwi was an accomplished diver and swimmer. She was fluent is seven different languages. She was a proud member of American Legion Post 379, VFW Post 4695 in Hurst, Woman's Honor Society Legionaries in Washington, D.C., and the DAV Chapter 21 of Fort Worth.
