Mary Simmons

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Mary Virginia Simmons Scholarship Fund.        Mary Virginia Wall was born Aug. 31, 1910, and lived her 98 years in Grapevine. Her family was one of the original founders of the area. She graduated from Grapevine High School and went on to graduate from SMU in 1932. Her life saw the first woman vote, both World Wars and the Great Depression through which she taught school. She married Hugh Simmons in 1937 and enjoyed a long married life until he passed away in December 1992.        Mary Virginia left a legacy for Grapevine that will survive all of us--from her skater monument that stands on Main Street to her museum work, as well as her book reviews, club memberships, and her history of the city that she shared with many. Above and beyond all of her social work, remembering the past is something Mary Virginia relished more than anything. She wanted everyone to carry on the heritage of Grapevine and the people who came before her. Her mental agility was sharp up to the time of her death.        Almost 100 years have passed since she was born and another hundred may pass before Grapevine sees another equal to Mary Virginia Wall Simmons. She held the world in her hands until the last moments of her life and she will be missed.        Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Sue Hall, and sister, Josephine Wright.        Survivors: Son, Thomas Wall Simmons and wife, Linda, of Fort Worth; brother, James Estill Wall and wife, Helen, of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. and additional surviving family members, Joe Ann and Bill Standlee and The Historic City of Grapevine.
