KEENE -- Nellie Bly "Nell" Slay Knox, a retired school teacher, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010, at her home in Keene. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday at Lucas & Blessing Funeral Home in Burleson. Dr. Mike Milburn, pastor of First Baptist Church of Burleson, will officiate. Visitation: The family will receive family and friends at 10 a.m. Memorials: May be made to Vitas Hospice Care, 2501 Parkview Drive, Suite 600, Fort Worth, Texas 76102. Nell was born July 27, 1925, in Wellington to James Temple Slay Sr. and Bessie Victoria Fraser Slay. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1942 and Texas State College for Women in 1946. She worked as an educator teaching homemaking and first grade throughout her career. She taught in the Paradise, Fort Worth, Perryton and Amarillo school districts. The bulk of her career was spent mentoring first graders at Ridglea Hills and J.T. Stevens elementary schools in Fort Worth. The family sends special thanks to Cheryl Pritchett, RN (with Vitas Hospice Care), and her team for their kind, compassionate and skilled care. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Eddie Slay; and her son, D.S. Knox Jr. Survivors: Daughter, Jo Ann Moore and husband, Bill, of Burleson; grandchildren, Dana Stayton and husband, Matt, of Fort Worth, Kendra Milburn and husband, Chris, of Burleson, Aisha Bauer and Josh Knox of California; great-grandson, Riley Stayton; brother, James Temple Slay Jr. and wife, Clara, of Amarillo; special friends, Angie Guerra, Laury Itza, Abner Itza; and many other friends and family.
