FORT WORTH -- Philip Sheinberg, 81, a proud Fort Worth native, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday morning, Jan. 20, 2009, with his family by his side. ?????? Funeral: 3 p.m. Thursday in the Barnett Sanctuary at Congregation Ahavath Sholom, 4050 S. Hulen St. Rabbi Alberto "Baruch" Zeilicovich and Dr. Javier Smolarz, ritual director, will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by members of Jewish War Veterans, Martin Hochster Post #755. Following committal prayers, Dr. Sheinberg will be laid to rest with family members in Ahavath Sholom Cemetery. Minyan services will be held Thursday at the residence, beginning at 6 p.m. ?????? Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Dr. Sheinberg's family suggests consideration of contributions to Congregation Ahavath Sholom, the American Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice. ?????? Born Oct. 6, 1927, the son of Sam and Pauline Fram Sheinberg, Philip attended North Side High School, class of 1945, where his love of football was born. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he became a lifelong Longhorn fan and graduated in 1949. He then attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where he received his medical degree in 1953. ?????? Dr. Sheinberg served as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force for two years and then returned to Hurst, where he was in family practice from 1956 until 1966. Philip completed a residency in ophthalmology in Michigan and returned to Fort Worth, where he practiced ophthalmology for more than 30 years. ?????? Philip was devoted to the practice of medicine and his patients and, most importantly, to his family. He married Nancy Silverman in 1961; they spent 47 happy years together. Philip was a man known for his strength, wit, dignity and kindness. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. ?????? The family would like to thank Community Hospice for its support and care, especially Linda Johnson and Randy French, and Dr. Jerry Barker of Texas Oncology. ?????? Survivors: In addition to his wife, Nancy, Philip is survived by his children, Lori Durbin and her husband, Peter, of Arlington, Michael Sheinberg and his wife, Tricia, of Diablo, Calif., Sam Sheinberg and his wife, Carrie, of Alexandria, Va., and Joan Amidei and her husband, Geoff, of Somerville, Mass.; grandchildren, Sarah Durbin, A.J. Sheinberg, Jake Sheinberg, Isabella Amidei and Nora Amidei; brothers, Joseph Sheinberg and his wife, Ruth, of Corpus Christi and Israel Sheinberg and his wife, Betty Sue, of Dallas; sisters, Gloria Swann of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Bayla Biskin and her husband, Harvey, of San Antonio; sister-in-law, Harriet Shumacher and her husband, Alan, of San Diego, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins and their families.
