FORT WORTH -- Raymond Emmett Moore Sr. passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, at a Fort Worth hospital after a lengthy illness. Graveside service: 1 p.m. Monday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Lane A. Visitation: The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Rd., Hurst. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the VITAS Hospice Inpatient Unit at Baylor All Saints Hospital, 1400 Eighth Ave., third floor, Building C, Fort Worth, Texas 76104. Raymond was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Simon, Okla., to James and Easter Moore. He grew up on the family farm in Simon, Okla. After graduating valedictorian of his class at Courtney High School, he continued his education at Southeastern State College in Durant, Okla. Two weeks prior to being inducted into the Army, Raymond married his high school sweetheart, Mary Edith Williams, on March 19, 1942. Raymond's unit, Company M, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, landed at Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion. He attained the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star as well as the Croix de Guerre from the French government. He was finally able to return home to his bride on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 1945. Shortly after returning from the war, Raymond and Mary moved to Silver City, N.M., where he completed his college degree at New Mexico State Teachers College. They lived briefly in California prior to moving to Texas. Raymond taught and coached basketball at Wildorado High School before entering the accounting profession. He worked as an accountant for several businesses before he started his own tax and accounting practice that he operated for many years. He was a multi-talented man who enjoyed making improvements to his home and gardening. In his later years he loved working with his computer and digital camera. He had an interest in genealogy and assembled a family tree album that his family will treasure for years to come. Raymond and Mary celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on March 19, 2008. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who made many sacrifices for his family. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest and Cecil. Survivors: His beloved wife of 66 years, Mary; children, Ray Moore and wife, Nita, of Bedford, Karen Mardis and husband, Robbie, of North Richland Hills; grandchildren, Bryan and Andy Moore, Trey and Brandon Mardis, and Micki Chipman; and great-grandchildren, Savannah and Kaelin Mardis, and Carson and Allison Chipman.
