FORT WORTH -- Sid Dale Uberman, 87, a real estate industry pioneer, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, June 8, 2008, at his home. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, 800 W. Fifth St. The Rev. Dr. Tim Bruster, senior minister of the church, will officiate. Following committal services, Sid will be laid to rest privately in Greenwood Memorial Park. His family will host a reception in Wesley Hall at the church immediately after the memorial service. Honorary bearers will be Joe Cates, Preston Geren, Bobby Helm, Robert Maddox, Doug McKenzie, Tex Moncrief, Ken Pearce, Terry Ryan, T.J. Schockley, Herb Simon, Melvin Simon and Gene Smyers. Memorials: Consideration of contributions to the Lena Pope Home, 3131 Sanguinet Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76107, in Sid's memory, is suggested. Born in Cleburne on May 24, 1921, Sid grew up in River Oaks. He was the son of Jack and Vayne Graham Uberman. He attended W.C. Stripling High, Arlington Heights High School and the University of North Texas. He married Irene Whitley in 1947 and had resided in Fort Worth for the 61 years they have been married. A dedicated real estate broker, he founded the Sid Uberman Co. in 1946, specializing in brokerage for some of the country's largest retail developers. Sid had a national reputation for integrity and hard work. He devoted the majority of his 55-plus-year career representing Melvin Simon, the No. 1 mall developer in the country, headquartered in Indiana. Sid was responsible for most of Simon's mall-related projects throughout the state of Texas. Often called "a legend in real estate," he worked silently behind the scenes while orchestrating complicated real estate transactions. He maintained a long-term relationship with companies such as Dillard's, Nordtrom's, J.C. Penney, Kravco and Shopco Group. He was a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, as well as the Exchange Club of Fort Worth. He also served on the board of the First National Bank, now Bank of America. Sid was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth and served on its Board of Trustees, Financial Committee and the Administrative and Foundation boards. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Irene, Sid is survived by his children, Jan Grab and her husband, Al, Joan Cordell and her husband, Philip, Jeanne Gibbs and her husband, Gary, and Dale Uberman and his wife, Cindi; six granddaughters; four grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
