On June 30, 2014, Sophie Gronquist, 98, passed away at her home in Austin, Texas. Born May 27, 1916, in Batavia, New York, Sophie relocated to Burlington, Vermont, and then to Buffalo, New York, before settling in Texas with her husband, Bob. A beloved wife, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Sophie is survived by her sister, Marian Mlynarczyk, of Buffalo, New York; grandsons, Justin Gronquist, Eran Gronquist, and Mark Gronquist, Mark's wife, Rachel Muir; and four great-grandchildren, Kate, Liv, Luke, and Scarlett, all of Austin, Texas. Sophie was preceded in death by husband, Robert Gronquist; son, Wayne Gronquist; and sisters, Jane Fronc and Wanda Ross. Always an avid reader of books and follower of current affairs, Sophie was a life-long Democrat. One of her great loves was cooking for her family -- the salads she could make from Jello are now a lost art. She was much loved by family and friends, her qualities of gentleness, kindness, and forgiveness will not be forgotten, and she will be greatly missed. Sophie's memorial service will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, at 10:00am, Thursday, July 3, at St. John The Apostle Roman Catholic Church. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00pm Wednesday, July 2, at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to Meals on Wheels or Hospice Austin, whose staff and volunteers showed such loving care to Sophie.
