He was the son of Thomas H Karr Sr and Fannie Lou Thomas. He was raised in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas along with 2 sisters (Charlene Fowler and Mary Chouinard) and 2 brothers (Bill Karr and Lawrence Karr). Tommy worked most of his life as a grocery man. He started his career in 1938 when he was 12, working for A&P Grocery Company. He proudly served his country during WWII as a platoon sergeant in the Marines. Tommy participated in the Peleliu and Okinawa campaigns as well as the occupation of China . He earned a Purple Heart during the battle of Shuri Castle on Okinawa . Upon his return to Dallas , he again went to work for A&P Grocery Company. In 1960 he opened his own grocery store, Busy Bee Grocery located on Ervay Street in downtown Dallas . After selling his grocery store, he became a truck driver delivering plants.
