FORT WORTH -- Harriet Virginia Barnes McKinney, 94, a loving mother, grandmother and aunt, died peacefully at her home Sunday morning, Aug. 17, 2008. Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2401 College Ave. Following committal prayers, Virginia will be laid to rest with her husband, William, at 5 p.m. in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Trinity. Visitation: Mrs. McKinney's family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Mary McKinney. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to St. John's Episcopal Church or to Camp Sanguinity, in Virginia's memory, is suggested. A native of Trinity, Virginia was born Feb. 3, 1914, the daughter of Dr. Frank L. and Allie Johnson Barnes. She attended Gulf Park College and graduated in 1936 from Rice Institute, now Rice University, where she was the first female editor of the Rice yearbook, "The Campanile." Virginia did graduate work at the University of Houston and the University of Texas at Austin and received a law degree from the South Texas School of Law in Houston. Following graduation, she worked for the Texas State Welfare Department, the Texas Legislature, the Red Cross in Houston and Humble Oil, now Exxon, in the legal department. Virginia remained active in politics throughout her life. She married Dr. William W. McKinney in 1942 and moved to Fort Worth in 1947. She served as local and state president of Pro America and was president of the Tarrant County Medical Auxiliary and the Wednesday Section of the Woman's Club of Fort Worth. She was an avid gardener and artist and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, River Crest Country Club, the Dinner Dance Club and the Lecture Foundation. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 2002; her sister, Mary; and her brothers, Ed and Peyton Barnes. Survivors: Virginia is survived by her children, Mary McKinney Swift and her daughter, Stephanie, of Fort Worth, William W. McKinney Jr., his wife, Maureen, and their son, Will, and daughters, Robin and Rebecca of Ogden, Utah, and Paul B. McKinney, his wife, Mary, and their children, Charles, Molly and Harriet, of Fort Worth; and many nieces and nephews, including Harriet Latimer, Aubrey Calvin, Dr. Frank Barnes and Dr. Peyton Barnes.
