-- Wilburn Ray "Pete" Durham, a Korean War veteran, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road, Hurst. Memorials: To honor Pete's memory the family requests memorials to the Humane Society of Fort Worth. Pete was born March 11, 1929, in Lynchburg, Va., and moved to Fort Worth over 50 years ago where he met the love of his life, Bobbie Jean. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Jean Durham, whom he wed Dec. 6, 1952. Pete was a buoyant and kind-hearted character. He laughed and made friends easily. He played ragtime-era piano, and frequently played the accordion. Pete was perhaps best defined as a lifelong champion of the underdog, made evident by his whirlwind, vastly underfunded campaign against Jim Wright for U.S. Congress in 1976. He graduated from Lynchburg College in 1961 under the G.I. Bill then retired in 1994 after 34 years of dedicated labor at Texas & Pacific Railroad. He will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors: children; Sharon Durham of Hurst, and Stephen Durham and wife Lori, of Austin.
